Perfecting the Vignette

Have you heard the term Vignette and not been too sure about what it means?

Well in just a few words, it is a curated style statement, made up of a group of objects.

Usually it is a grouping of homewares pieces, but it can incorporate flowers, collections, kitchenware, mementoes, photos and even crafts.

A Vignette is a way of creating little scenes in your home, using your favourite pieces and collections. A Vignette doesn’t have to be a permanent display of these items, you can add or take away pieces, or even move the Vignette to another room if you like. I change mine with the Seasons and also when I get bored of them (which is pretty often).

Now that you know what it means, how do you create your own?

Studying other people’s Vignettes is a great way to get some ideas on how to put your own together, I find Pinterest great for this, even doing some window shopping can be inspirational.

As you can see from the image above, a tray is a great base for a Vignette, it corrals your display, giving you a small area to work with, kind of a frame for your collection. Which is especially good when you are just starting to create some Vignettes of your own. If you look at this display and pretty much every other Vignette you come across, whether on Pinterest, in Magazines, Store Displays or Social Media, you will notice that they all loosely form a kind of triangle, the tall candleholders at the back, the vase in the middle then the perfume bottle and the trinket dish, this is an important part of your Vignette creation and something to keep in mind when collecting pieces for your display.

To get your Vignette looking amazing it will need to have pieces of varying heights. There is absolutely no need to be symmetrical here, I mean you can if that's what you love, but it's not a rule by any means. If you have your pieces going from tallest to smallest, in a triangle shape, it will look fabulous. I actually prefer an asymmetrical display for my home, as you can see in the image above. I have used a glass jar to raise the candle holder at the back to give extra height to this Vignette, you can use anything you like, books, boxes, jars.....

There are no rules around what should or shouldn't be included in a Vignette, although a good way to approach the design is by grouping your pieces according to their "family". In the image above, a collection of shells looks perfect displayed on some books perfectly titled Coastal and Outdoor Living, I have used some natural wooden beads here, but we could add some Driftwood and maybe a Succulent in a rustic pot. I have used the books instead of a tray in this display, you could use a beautiful Platter a Serving Board or even a Storage Box.

So, what do you need to remember?

Use varying heights and depths for your display.

Make sure your Vignette is a triangle or pyramid shape.

Ground your display with a Book or a Tray or even both!

Group your pieces according to their "families". P.S these candles smell amazing!
